I bought this on Ebay from a man who had found it in a shed he cleaned out. He had no history to offer on the machine. Given the number painted on it It appears to have come from a large institution, school?, industry? - other. There is no government accession tag. The serial No. 71058, was found on the end of the infeed table.
Having reviewed the old crescent catalogs on the site I think that this machine was most likely made between 1926 and 1929. The fence is identical to that shown in the '26 catalog, but the ball bearings seem to be a later development. In the '29 catalog the machine is shown with ball bearings, but a different style of fence. The motor is a 1/3 HP repulsion start-induction run by peerless. It is connected directly to the two knife cutter head with a flexible coupling. The '26 model was equipped with a universal motor.
Aside from surface rust, this machine is in good shape except for the guard bracket casting (not shown) which was damaged in shipping. The fence lock knobs also appear to have been replaced. Please contact me if you have any good ideas as to the actual born-on date, a source for original knobs for the fence, or an original guard. Also, while it would appear that the toggle switch is original, I suspect there was some round brass operator or shroud over the switch - see the end view. Any thoughts on this would be most welcome.
