Answered a C-list ad for some vague photos that looked like a camelback... Got this instead. It was only $50, and I saw it run, so I couldn't just leave it there. It would have been scrapped for sure.
It's a curious machine, and I have not yet seen another one. Jeff J. was able to locate the original patent drawings, which are now catalogued on this site, and I was able to find one advertisement for it in an old boiler maker periodical, but other than that, and the fact that the thing is taking up space in my shop, it may as well not exist. I'm guessing that it was a transitional design- a sort of genetic dead-end. Given the period, with many shops transitioning from line shaft to smaller electric motors, and the fact that industry in general was shifting in a major way, it's no surprise that a machine patented during this time never really took off.
I am hoping to find someone with the ability to undo the modifications that have been made and get this thing back to original spec. It needs a friction drive, known as a "v-disk" for this particular patent, and I have no idea where to even start on that...
Anyway, here are the photos. It's in fair condition. The table lift mechanism is perfect, and aside from a few broken handles, the only real damage is a break in the spindle rack.
