Comments:
This machine is a Davis and Wells [a Los Angeles based company which is no longer in business] horizontal boring machine. It may also be equipped for use as a mortising machine. It is all cast iron construction. The machine was purchased at a garage sale. It was fairly rusty but no major parts were missing. It was completely disassembled. All castings were sand blasted. The machines has eight carriage bearings and two spindle bearings. All were replaced. The chuck may be removed and male threaded drill bits may be directly mounted to the spindle. Many woodworkers use four flute metal cutters chucked in the machine to cut mortises. It is original in all respects with the except of the machinery gray color. The cast iron table moves up and down on gibbed ways 1/4" per turn of the table crank. The spindle moves in to the work using the foot pedal and a clamp keeps the work piece in place. Subsequent to rebuilding this machine during 2001 it was sold to a woodworking student at the College of the Redwood, Fort Bragg, CA.
