Comments:
I was told about this lathe from a friend who saw it at a garage sale. Tracked it down along and bought it along with a 1940's 14 inch band saw and shaper. Lathe was in good shape, just needing a good cleaning and repainting. This lathe has Timken taper bearings in the headstock which are lubricated in an oil bath. Oil is added through an oil cup in the top of the head stock. I wasn't planning to take apart the headstock, but oil leaking out of the endcaps/faces changed my mind. I was surprised to find that the endcaps are only sealed around the shaft with a leather seal and the face has nothing. I decided to pack the bearings with wheel bearing grease instead of the oil bath and sealed the caps to the face of the headstock with a small bead of blue RTV. So far, smooth running and no leaks.
