This machine is a TWO CARVING HEAD DUPLICATING CARVER manufactured by ST PAUL MACHINERY MANUFACTURING CO. It has been completely restored by AMERICAN MACHINE of Shelby NC. It can make 3 dimensional copies of a model by clamping the model (for example a duck decoy) on the center of the table with the clamping fixtures provided, and then clamping the blanks to be carved to the left and or right of the model. A stylus is put in the holder of the floating carriage starting with the largest provided and a same size cutter is placed in the chuck over the blank to be carved. Note that the motors are individually switched so you can make one copy or two copies. After roughing using the large stylus and cutter, you replace them with the next size smaller stylus and cutter and repeat until you have used the finest stylus and cutter. The Floating carriage is balanced with the round balls which are counterweights and can be move left right up down and diagonally with fingertips. An additional feature of this machine is that it not only makes copies of a model, it will also make a reverse of the model ( back to the duck decoy, it will make one facing left and one facing right using the same model) The table is removable and you will find three spurred face plates at the rear of the machine and three dead centers at the front, These are used to copy long items like spindles, posts, and rifle gunstocks. The model is again placed in the center and one or two blanks to be carved are placed to the left and or right. The model and blanks are rotated using a cranking mechanism which rotates the pieces together.
