My father-in-law passed down to me a Shopsmith 10ER about 40 years ago. It was complete with many accessories including the variable speed control. I used the ER as my primary drill press, as a disk and drum sander, and as my only lathe. About 12 years ago, having acquiried a full shop of single purpose machines, I passed the ER down to my oldest son. Notwithstanding the growing stable of professional dedicated machines, I missed the Shopsmith, particularly when the occasional need for horizontal boring arose and when I needed a disk sander. Nothing beats the accuracy of the Shopsmith disk sander, with which you can move the spinning disk into a workpiece firmly clamped to the table. I've bought and restored three ER's, having sold the first two. This one, however, is a keeper.

I bought this machine from the sons of the original owner and restored it spring 2013. It showed a good amount of rust, having been stored for years in a damp shed; however, there was little pitting. It had the 4" jointer, which is shown restored and mounted (without the special drive belt) in the first photo, and several other accessories including the factory stand ends with lift wheels--a great convenience. Knowing that I never would use the jointer and some of the other tools, I've since sold them. I disassembled the headstock entirely and replaced all the bearings; also replaced the motor bearings. Other than that restoring this machine was a matter of cleaning, polishing, and painting.
