I would like to add the following evidence in relation to dating General Manufacturing machines by serial numbers. My planers serial number is L1900, i know that it was purchased in 1976 for a new school that opened in my area at that time. Now according to dating information posted on this site for this manufacturer, the serial number with the prefixed letter L would date it to 1974. Now to add what i would consider to be rock solid evidence that the prefixed letter L dates my planer to 1976 i wish to share this photograph of the inside of the pulley guard of my planer where someone at the General plant dated and signed there name.You must agree that is a very rare and exciting discovery in our world of vintage woodworking machinery.Hope this helps other fans of General Munufacturing machinery.
