An Oliver 182 15" disk sander. This has been a quest item for me for a long time. In a recent shop restructure, we sold off a lot of machinery. We had two these. One had the original miter and circle gauge, this one was missing those items. That one went for way more than I wanted to pay, but in then end, I was able to purchase the second one. For a machine from 1930, it is in excellent shape. Other than missing the gauges, everything is intact. The motor showed very little wear at all. Original bearings were open slot fill type. I opted for sealed deep groove radials.
The brass badge and the table are both marked with the serial number 17773. This would have placed this design way too early. I made an inquiry to Eagle and said that I would expect it to date from late 20's to 30's. They determined that the serial number was 37773. Eagles response:
Looks like you figured right.
s/n 17773 was a lathe that shipped to NY in 1916
s/n 37773 was a 182 Sander that shipped to the Univ of Minn on 10/03/30
This makes me the second owner as with many of my Oliver machines from the 1930's.
