Comments:
This 6 ½ inch tall plated brass turbine appears to be either a patent model or more likely a salesman’s sample. It is accompanied by a mahogany carrying case. Salesman’s samples were miniature versions of a company’s product and were shown to prospective buyers to give a better and working understanding of them.

This example represents Humphrey Machine’s I-X-L turbine which they state in their catalogue was first placed on the market in 1874.

Water powered turbines and steam engines were the prime drivers of woodworking, metalworking and most classes of machinery before the adoption of the electric motor.

The patent for this turbine can be found at: http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?number=260202&typeCode=0
