The 10EE is the Rolls Royce of super precision toolroom lathes, and anyone who has one will rarely give it up. That's true for my 10EE as it is my favourite piece of equipment in my shop. It's amazing to know you can still call up Monarch Tool and order a new 10EE today ... provided you have just shy of US$100,000 to pay for it!

I was lucky to acquire this beauty in Nov 2011 from a retiring machinist who had babied it in his home shop for over 30 years. Over it's life, it's done some work, but you'd never know to look at it. Once I got to my shop, I tore it completely apart and put it back together after a light refurb and new paint job back to it's factory original gray color. Much of the electrics were original with a lot of oil-soaked wiring, so I rewired the entire machine and added modern Allen-Bradley switches and controls. I also built a new control panel for the DC drive system as I prefer to have all the buttons in one place.

These machines are heavy (3,250 lbs) and have lots of power with a massive Reliance 3 HP DC motor giving it speed ranges of 8-800 RPM in low and 40-2,400 RPM in high. You may notice I have my 10EE sitting up on a 4.5" riser to bring the spindle centerline up to 48.5" off the floor which is the most comfortable work height for me.

Comments: I built this control panel to position the controls in a convenient place for the operator. I have a 2nd e-stop wired in series with the panel at knee level.

Comments: The headstock has a 3" D-1 CamLock nose and can take stock thru the spindle up to 1.5" diameter hole. The oil sight glasses allow monitoring of oil levels in key reservoirs. The huge spindle tach is very nice to dial in speeds.

Comments: The carriage on a 10EE is massive. I've added an Aloris BXA tool post as it's a little beefier than the Aloris AXA it came with.

Comments: Monarch sold a small optional tooling cabinet to sit beside the lathe, and since my lathe didn't come with one, I use a small 5-drawer roll cab plus a 2-drawer add-on to store most of the tooling. On top you can see several other chucks that won't fit in.
