I just bought this lathe in Lyn, near Brockville Ontario. The seller said he bought it at the auction at the Caintown blacksmith shop. I remember going to that same sale about 1979 with my then 4 year old son, who came home black. It has been sitting in an open drive shed for 34 years. There is no makers name on it anywhere. Some online research led me to this lathe,(http://www.geocities.ws/flatbeltmachines/scwlathe.htm ) which is pretty much identical. It is the basis of attributing it to S C Wright, and dating it about 1870 (it has his 1867 patent date on it). Also see this one: http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/antique-machinery-history/early-fitchburg-worcester-lathe-id-ideas-257356/ . I think this lathe has so much class in all its details.

Nice legs, scallopy skirt, extra fine ball cranks, classy tailstock and clamp nut.

The other ball crank is in the box of parts, along with 10 change gears and some other items I haven't identified yet.

The front leadscrew was driven by a 3-step flat belt pulley, which has been smashed.

The bells that cover the oil holes are neat, and look at the turned detail in the hub of the first gear
