The photographs don’t come close to accurately portraying just how large and heavy a machine this is. Heavy frame cross section, heavy feed rolls and pressure bar – heavy everything! Sorry I didn’t have a tape measure. At least a 30 inch machine – maybe as large as 36 inches. Has a presence more in line with the later Buss and Whitney high capacity surfacers than the normal New England fare. Model “No 85” patent Dec 6, 1887.

Seen at the Windsor Fair in Windsor Maine and part of the permanent collection of the Windsor Historical Society.

I checked my late 1880s catalogue which states that Woods made these in 24, 27, and 30 inch widths – this must be the 30. The weight is given as 3300 lbs though it does not say for which width. Lists as planning 10 or 12 inches thick, 4000 RPM. They manufactured a double sided machine as well.
