Comments:
Shortly after beginning to put together a line-shaft driven shop (about a dozen years ago), I found this steam engine in Baldwin, MI and decided it would make a great addition to the shop. With some amount of mechanical work, a re-painting and the addition of a used gas fired boiler out of a dry cleaners, we found the engine to do a good job of powering the old shop. Sadly, with the line-shaft also being able to be driven by two separate electric motors, I find it's easier to run things with the motors and not with steam. One of the motors does reflect the era when electric motors were replacing central steam engines and the engineers would maintain sections of line-shaft, but instead drive that section with an individual motor. The large pulley on the ceiling to the left of the steam engine is currently driven by a motor on the other side of the wall. The belt can also be removed from the motor and run from the drive pulley on the steam engine. I understand that this engine was originally used in a paper mill in southern Michigan.
