This is part of a collection of Vintage Machinery located in an old water powered grist mill in Lewis County. NY.
The mill operated as a feed mill until the 1970's. Most if not all of the mills drive system still exists in excellent condition.
The previous owner, acquired this collection and filled one floor of the mill wall to wall.
Everything appears to be in excellent condition and immediately operable.
The property, water rights, buildings and the mill with its contents were purchased by its current owner Ross Phelps.
It is with his permission that this and many other pieces of equipment are posted.
I dated the piece as follows
In 1865, Smith purchased the town of Shreveville, NJ, and renamed it to Smithville and moved his operations there.
H. B. Smith Machine Co. was incorporated in 1878, which may mark the first use of that name.
The casting alone would make it Post 1865.
The H.B Smith Mach Co Name on the leg cross support (Last Pic) dates it as Post 1878.
This is a very early example of a H.B. Smith Jointer.
The blade guard has a flexible armadillo shield constructed from wood slats attached to leather. Still fully flexible.
See pictures for full appreciation.
