It is a straight shaft, meant to have the bits or a secondary Drill-Bit holder bolted in.
If you bolt in an additional straight chuck or adjustable chuck you loose 2-3".
Contemporary 1/2" straight shaft adjustable chucks are available for about $35.
In the process of cleaning it up I discovered a stamp on the chuck between the two holes, The top line is stamped JUNE 18.0 The Second line reads LANCASTER PA. A detail of the chuck is shown below. The top line would have been JUNE 18.07 The date of the Bit Holder Patent issue. I have been told by someone who owns this model, that PAT precedes the date.
This is a VM Link to the Patent Detail. Very interesting. http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?id=16587
It came with 5 bits. The shafts are a tad shy of 1/2", each with a flat.
The table is interesting.
You loosen the wing nut and swing it out of the way exposing a yoke.
I would think that drilling was a slow process, it is not exactly ergonomically designed.
The board is not original. Routed edges.
It has been cleaned up, greased and oiled for corrosion protection.
