This machine came from a school auction. I had been getting outbid at the school auctions for over a year, but I still watched them, but this was the second time in a month that I was able to win. This lot included the 1950's version cast iron Baldor pedestal which I will use on my 1950's Baldor 12" grinder, as well as a very complete Baldor 12" grinder and a partially complete Baldor 8" grinder. This is a 3/4 hp, three phase motor which spins at 3450 RPM. This one had a the original tool rest and wheel guard removed ( and then lost) and had a shop made welded cover for a wire wheel. The wheel grabbed a work piece and crashed it into the guard, breaking it off where it met the shaft. I would love to find an original 8" wheel guard and cover and tool rest for the left side of this machine, but it isn't a top priority. The cover for the heater box was also lost when the electricians came around to shut off the power, so I think I will be looking for parts there also. Again, a pretty low priority given the condition of the 12" grinder is pretty much plug and play right now.

This machine was mounted off of a strange shop made platform that extended behind the 12" grinder which was on the pedestal. They incorporated a quenching dish right at the intersection of the grinder and the platform. After 50 years of water sitting there, the bolts were rusted to the platform and that made getting this grinder off of the platform a real bear. I had to remove it from the pedestal still stuck to the platform, which I had to unbolt from the bottom of the 12" grinder to get it to drop free. That ended up being a lot more dirty metal that I had to carry home in my car before I could get to a drill to remove the last pieces of the sheared off bolts that held the filthy mess together. Meanwhile, I was leaving a fine trail of black dust everywhere I went.

These grinders had served the Granger High School metal shop well for 50 years but the city built a new high school next door and they wanted new machines for the new, much smaller shop.
