Comments:
I recently came into possession of an early Walker-Turner drill press in totally complete and working condition (the latter probably in part to the benefits of the dry climate of Albuquerque, New Mexico). It is a bench style machine and complete with the original motor labeled “Green Band, Driver Line, Walker-Turner Inc. The motor is a 1/3 hp with 1725 rpm rating. The reach from the primary support to the drill center is 6.5". It apparently sports the original switch, a simple toggle, located inconveniently behind the main support rod of the drill press. The machine has the original factory plate on the side of the housing, but does not have a serial number (apparently serial numbers were started in 1939). In the place where the serial number tag should be, is a paper sticker somewhat the worse for wear but it is identical others pictured on the OWWM site which says "SKF Ball Bearings, The most expensive bearings in the world". It has a ½” Jacobs chuck Series 33 and a Jacobs chuck key ironically labeled Series 32 attached to the machine with a chain. The following photos illustrate the machine as it came to me after just a brief cleaning, and trial run.
My best guess on age is pre 1939 on the basis of the lack of a serial number. The factory was moved from Jersey City, New Jersey to Plainfield, New Jersey in 1931, and because my machine has the Plainfield, New Jersey label, I’m attributing it to or after the move date of 1931. To clarify the dating, I’d say it is 1931-1939 inclusively. It differs from the drill press illustrated in the 1934 catalog in having a simple rod for raising and lowering the drill head instead of the 4 barred handle illustrated in the catalog.
