This Oliver 370-D was purchased at a government auction. At the time of purchase, it was missing the fence, miter and blade guard. Everything worked mechanically and electrically, but the machine really needed some cosmetic work. During the restoration process, I added a Biesemeyer fence and extension table that would take advantage of the 52” long fence. I was also able to purchase a miter and wrench set.
I was told that this saw was part of a group of saws that were shipped to an army depot in Rockford, Illinois in 1967. The 370 models were made by Oliver for the U.S. government and are very close in design to the 270-D model. I am not sure how many were made in total, but I am guessing that there were not many as you do not come across them very often.
In comparing this saw to information available on the 270-D, the only differences I could find were that the table is slightly larger measuring 44-1/2” X 44” versus the standard 44-1/2” X 36-3/4”. The auxiliary table was also larger, measuring 18” X 20”. Additionally, the arbor has a diameter of 1-1/8”, compared to the standard 1”. The saw would take a 16” saw blade that could be lowered below the table top. I am not sure if the 270 could lower a 16” blade below the table.
These are the only differences I could find. I would think there would be more changes than this for the government to have a special model made for them. Maybe that is why only a few were made.
