I saved this cabinet from a bonfire out of pity.While cleaning it ( I've seen actual grinders with less swarf buildup) , I found the legend "Greenfield Machine Co Greenfield, Mass" on the left door, and Universal Grinding Machine" on the right. The original shelves had been torn out and replaced with a till for holding planes. I took the cabinet apart (it's all butt joints, with a rabbeted back and held together with finish nails), scraped the filth off of it, made some repairs and wiped it down with oil. I've fitted new shelves; the originals were held in with nails, but I didn't want to do that until I knew what the original shelves were like. The wood is similar in density and grain to walnut, but it's golden. I didn't want to cut into it to find out.
All in all, an interesting piece of history that very nearly went up in smoke.
