This lathe was seen on a local buy-and-sell site. Pictures and information are reproduced here courtesy of the seller, Randall Arthur. Thanks also to Art Shaw for bringing the lathe to our attention and for providing some expert analysis of the modifications to the lathe, as detailed below.
The lathe has had some modifications over the years. It looks like the original Babbitt bearings were replaced with pillow blocks, which lifts the shaft up higher; the tailstock must also be raised, and that's why where is a riser "box" on the lathe bed. It is uncertain whether or not the channel iron bed is original, since most wood-turning lathes of that era originally had wooden beds.
The seller acquired the lathe 35 years ago from a cabinet maker in Sutton, Ontario, who specialized in making high-end poster beds.
The lathe specs:
Length = 99”
Height = 50”
Depth = 27”
Between centres = 60”
Clearance inboard = 9”
Motor: 3/4 HP, wired for 220V.
The lathe comes with a variety of accessories:
Tool rests (6)
Inboard and outboard faceplates
Calipers (8)
Chucks (2),
Live centres (3).
Steel blanks (3),
Turning chisels (12)
A tool cabinet to store the above
