Comments:
Not sure which company this should go under - Dole & Silver or Dole, Silver & Demings. The patent date is Oct 31, 1865 and with the brownish red paint and the pin striping, I would say it was early but could go up into the later 1800's. This one and a couple others came from a collection of wheel wright machines and other foot powered machinery. The ad is from an 1888 Blacksmith and Wheelwright magazine/paper. Here is a quick link to the patent on the headstock. http://www.datamp.org/patents/search/advance.php?id=2039&set=10

The patent for the cutter head is http://www.datamp.org/patents/search/advance.php?id=10889&set=7

it is for one that goes in an auger but the cutting part is the same.
This is an update with correct patent dates and links to the patents.
