This is a 16" Powermatic planer I recently purchased for $400. Bought it from a machine shop in my neighborhood, the story is that the father of the owner of the shop did a job for the city of Philadelphia and this machine was to be scrapped and was given to him. It sat neglected in a corner for years and years until I stumbled across it. Motor is a 2 phase 3hp. 2 phase was the industrial standard in very few areas of the country at one time and is only available in a few locations now. I'll be replacing it with a 3 phase motor.

I've restored about a dozen or so wood working machines at this point and never really documented the process. I thought it would be interesting to show how I do it. Payback for all the invaluable information I've picked up from OWWM. First step is a complete tear down of the machine. Then a hot soapy bath for most of the parts to remove grease, dirt and most of the paint. Water is heated with the heating element from a regular electric oven, an aquarium pump agitates the water. Overnight in the bath and most parts are 90% ready.

Then its off to paint. I use automotive lacquer primer, and a combination of automotive paints and spray cans. Nuts and bolts are wire wheeled and clear lacquered. Most of the bearings will be pressed out and replaced. I will post pics as I progress.

Everything gets reassembled and rewired. Hopefully after all that, I'll have a beautiful machine that will give me another 50 years of reliable hassle free service. Feel free to get in touch Strangetanks@yahoo.com
