Comments:
I purchased this disc sander in 2011, and haven't even brought it home yet to spiff up or use! Based on my research so far, the sander apparently spent the first 60 years of its life in a pattern shop for a marble quarrying company, and I believe I am only its third owner to date.

The motor is a General Electric, 1/2 HP, 1800 rpm, which may be original equipment, except for the bulky electrical box and replacement switch. As specified on the nameplate, the motor type is "RKT" which, according to an authoritative reference book for fractional horsepower motors, was GE's designation for a polyphase induction motor with squirrel cage construction. Since the motor runs fine on single phase power, I suspect that part of the electrical equipment in the attached box serves to enable the polyphase motor to deal with a single phase supply, but I haven't confirmed that theory yet.
