Comments:
This engine was purchased presumably new from Schleicher Schumm in 1889 by the University of Toronto. The engine was used as a teaching engine as well as power for the machine shop.
It is, to the best of our knowledge the oldest internal combustion engine in Canada.
It features slide valve ignition and represents the first IC engine designed in the new world as it's predecessors at Schleicher Schumm were closely copied from the parent company (Deutz) type 'A' engines.
It was displayed at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto from 1978-2003 and was purchased from U of T in 2009.
Engines with slide valve ignition had to run on some balance of hydrogen for the slides to work. Coal or Town gas was used in Toronto until about 1910 and we first ran it in April of 2009 for the first time in almost 100 years.

It is currently undergoing an 'unrestoration' to return it to original paint condition.
