I do not know the history; it was purchased at a residential setting but I am not sure to what extent it was used for hobby or for trade.
I later purchased a router collet which fit the interchangeable spindle mount, for versatility. Though people prefer to use a router for small router bits, so far so good!
Note that the collet may have only been made for the model 27 / 27s (not sure) but it fit my 26 perfectly. Part numbers (AFAIK): the 1/2" collet is 6028024 and the 1/4" adapter is 6028025.

Rear view showing internals - 3HP motor, small reversing switch, fence adjustments. On the right is the spindle vertical lock. I replaced the homemade 2" port with a 4" one from Rockler.

From left: Drawbar nut and drawbar; 3/4" diam interchangeable spindles (2), 1" i/c spindle, 1/2" collet and adapter to 1/4" (for router bits), and the quill assembly. The drawbar inserts at the bottom of the quill and screws into the bottom of the spindle
