Original post - 10-18-2012 - Obtained from a private sale in Central Michigan in 2012. While looking briefly at the PO, I couldn't tell if it was homemade or not, due to the drive and idler pulley being manufactured. On inspection, it is obviously homemade, but pretty well made. Looks like the uprights are what may have been Unistrut, with the side plates welded 3/16 steel. All of the idlers have sleeve bearings; the drive pulley has some sort of sleeve bearing that has wallowed out a bit. The table and platen are 5/16 aluminum plate. It resembles a Dayton strip sander - the top pulley is correct, as well as the idlers, and the tension spring at the top. Perhaps the maker had a scrapped strip sander and repurposed parts?

It runs fine - will have to figure out a better drive pulley bearing and put it to use.

------- New information 10-11-2013 - I found a posting on a local Craigslist add ( see attached picture) for a Dayton 1 X 42 strip sander, and it matches the build, especially the table mount, and the idler wheels. I guess I was right, that at least two owners ago, a Dayton sander was used for parts to build my current sander.
Still need to find a drive pulley bearing solution, but at least I know more about the origin of this sander.
