Comments:
This machine came from a local auction sale in the early '80s. It has been sitting in my barn ever since. I attribute it to E E Abbott because of its proximity to Gananoque. I don't have enough examples available of Abbott machines to confirm the attribution. There are no castings in this machine. It is all wood and wrought iron. I do know that Abbott used a lot of wrought iron parts in his woodworking machines. It looks like it was inspired by the mortisers of J A Fay from the same period and earlier.

Comments: The working principle is the same as J A Fay's patent.

Comments: The return spring would be a board fastened to the ceiling. It is missing and someone has attached the totally unsuitable coil spring.

Comments: The wing nut at the back adjusts the chisel in or out to accommodate the thickness of the wood.
