This seems to be the first Commander labeled machine that has surfaced around here. Several mentions of Commander-badged motors from the early thirties, but so far no machines. I mistook it for the more common Companion grinder, but the sleeve bearings and oil caps made me suspicious. It is in very good shape, but for missing tool rests, one arbor flange, and a chunk missing on one of the cast wheel shrouds. 1/4 hp, made by Sunlight, apparently. It is very nearly whisper quiet (as yet without wheels). There are 115. numbers stamped on the inside of the wheel shrouds.
(Admin BAK, 5/3/2017: added mfg date based on tag code.)
I don't know the age exactly. Looking in the earlier Craftsman catalogs (1932, 1933) The name Commander shows up, but the motors and one grinder so labeled are identified as ball bearing equipped. The 1930 Craftsman catalog wasn't any help. So I guessed at the year. If anyone knows a way to narrow this further I'd be interested.
