This is where it all begins---Tree into lumber. T.H. Ricker saw mill on static display at the Maine State Museum in Augusta Maine. Cone pulleys on left give three speeds of feed. Lever gives forward and reverse motion to the carriage. Forward motion is given by pressing the small friction pulley seen on the right end of the feed shaft against a larger iron pulley which transmits power to a pinion which meshes with a rack of gears on the underside of the carriage. A loose belt on two flanged pulleys gives reverse motion to the carriage when the belt is tightened via the small arm mounted pulley attached to the feed lever.
The Maine State Museum is a must see for the enthusiast of old wood working machinery. One of their centerpieces is a multi story recreation of a typical small-scale water powered wood working shop. The collection includes an up and down saw mill, a Ricker circular saw mill, a clapboard mill, an early band saw, an early shaper, lathes, a planer blade sharpening machine, a stave saw, a barrel heading saw, a shingle mill, and a Ricker bolting mill.
