Comments:
I traded a 30HP motor for a hunk of rust, and this is what emerged (with a little help from me). Some previous owner did a great job of making a low speed countershaft for the machine. Shown in the photos is an 1140 RPM three phase motor that will be getting replaced with a 1750 RPM single phase motor that will still give me a very low bottom end speed. Some previous owner had installed a 3/4HP Master repulsion-induction motor, but that motor wasn't designed for vertical orientation (no thrust bearing) plus it isn't electrically reversible so it had to go. This is a very heavily built drill press that is in most ways the equal of my former Atlas 1810. The WT has a little larger throat capacity and longer quill travel (7" vs. 6"), but the Atlas has a much more sophisticated power feed system. This drill has a 2MT socket, but I have a spare, non-power feed head with a 3MT socket. I think this drill will be great for tapping. In the pictures that follow, the fluorescent lights in my basement make the color look lighter than it really is.
