A very large man sold this to me at our local flea market in 2011 for $5. It had been spray painted over every surface, including the grinding wheel, the motor, and the 2x10 that both were mounted to. There are no badges but it is identical to Dan Hoenisch's 1930s listing in this photo index. A difference is that his has "Companion" on the base and No.1 cast on the side; mine has neither. An entry by John Brockman confirms the ID. I found the same item in a Sears 1951 catalog, but it is not identified as a "Companion" product.
The shaft spins nicely and the motor spins nicely. With a little love and kisses and new wheels, it will do well as a specialty buffer, probably for restorations.
