8/2012. This is another example of letting co-workers know you are interested in old woodworking machines. My co-worker is trying to clear out tools he doesn't use; it seems he bought this from someone about 4 years ago in the Saginaw, MI area, and has not used it. So he asks me the other day if I would be interested in an ' old radial jig saw', since he knew I like old arn. I go to look at it, and have to contain a smile - yet another example of a Walker-Turner Gooseneck scroll saw! It has a Green-band motor, is nearly complete, and works! The PO's Dad brazed the bracket where the hold-down rod is held; should clean up well - other than missing the hold-down foot - it is complete after nearly 80 years. Not sure what it was used for early on - pretty oily, so perhaps a machine shop. Based on the reprint files, this is approximately 1933, certainly older than 1940. There has been discussion on owwm.org about the use of these saws for cutting brake linings; this saw certainly would have the clearance.

I'll clean this one up, and build a stand for it - the cool factor is just too large.

Edit - 9/2/2012 - based on feedback from Mike Levine, this saw is a J-24 model, first appearing in a 1933 catalog. The SJ-30 casting numbers may be a part number, not a model number as I suspected.
