I bought the planer at a flea market some years back with no motor. I rigged a stand with 2 motors, one to drive the cutter head, one to drive the feed rolls, and took an educated guess and set the blades at .125" proud of the cutter arbor. The machine ran, but was almost dangerous to operate. After looking at OWWM website, and contacting Bob Holcombe, I discovered how worng everything was. The P.O. had modified the chip chute to install a vacuum chip exhaust, and had blocked arouind the table to "facilitate" air flow. All this did was block any chance for chips to be discharged. After one or two passes, the machine had to be shut down and the chips manually removed. Luckily the sheet metal for the top cover was basically intact. After some manual-consulting I was able to rebuild the cover to original configuration. The knives were reset to .062" using a dial indicator. The machine then ran like a top. The next logical step was to do a complete teardown, replace parts, build a new base, with one drive motor, as originally made. Happily, most of the moving parts, bushings, bearings, gears(some rework required), and even the height adjusting screw (again some rework) are comercially available.
