I am happy to report that the disease has returned. Yesterday I bought this lovely benchtop aircraft carrier from a fellow who moved here recently from Florida. He purchased it several years ago in Tampa; no other history is known. My brief research to this point suggests that this Montreal-based company put its badge on machines made by others, and that they may not have actually manufactured any themselves. I will look for other identifying marks as I disassemble it, and I will do more research on Bournival & Co.
The top measures 32 cm by 124 cm, which suggests that it was made in a metric country. (The English measurements are oddball fractions.) The badge does, however, say "& Co." rather than "& Cie.", as it probably would have were it intended for the French-speaking Quebec market. So, I dunno.
The machine has no motor but is in impressively good condition. It has fairly new Freud knives (a two-bladed cutter head), no rust, tight bearings, and all the moving parts seem ok. You can see that a previous owner made a nice aluminum cutter head guard. If I can get a better feeling about the vintage or the company, I'll maybe etch a logo on the top of the guard just for looks. My guess is that it hails from the first couple of decades of the 20th century, based on a review of the hundreds of jointers on this web site.
So, as usual, I invite commentary and speculation as to its vintage or provenance. Also, I wonder what HP rating and cutting head RPM I should work toward.
More photos after shine-up and paint.
Thanks!
Larry Hampton
