Bought the machine from a patternmaker who got out of the business. He had acquired this machine and several others when he bought out an older patternmaker years ago. He had let this machine and all the rest deteriorate in storage in a very damp and humid garage behind his house when his shop went out of business. I bought three machines from him on the way to Arnfest several years ago. I still have an Oliver 399D to refurbish from that haul.
I didn't really do much but clean it up and repaint this sander. It had lots of light rust and I filled a fair amount of body work, but mechanically it needed nothing but a couple new Gits oilers. Even has the original miter gage with it. The previous ownership had added a drum switch to stop/start/reverse the platen.
This is the second one of this model of Oliver disc sanders I have owned. I refurbished a double sided one of these a few years ago (http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=4972). I really like the design. Not as nice looking as the Master disc sanders from Kindt-Collins but it is a well put together machine.
