~Very Rare Hobbs Manufacturing Step Miter Cutting Machine~

This machine, also known as a 'guillotine' (or so I have been told) is used for miter cutting picture frame mouldings. The blades are extremely sharp and cut clean and precise miters. It is a very well made, heavy-duty machine.

A friend who is a picturer framer and actually uses a machine similar to this one says this is an extremely rare, hard to find machine and that this one is much nicer and more elaborate than the one he owns!

How it Works: Mouldings are placed in the machine under the blades and a foot pedal is depressed to make the cut. There is a fence with a built-in stop to help keep the moulding to the exact length desired. The blades can be removed for sharpening.

History: Hobbs Manufacturing Company was founded in 1885 and incorporated in 1895. Their major product line was paper box machinery, but they also made woodworking machinery; that line expanded in 1903 following a major factory renovation and expansion. The company was sold and the name changed sometime in the early 1900's. The exact age of this machine is not known, but is somewhere between 1885 and the early 1900's.
