Comments:
This jointer was found on Craigslist. I bought it off of a guy that lives in North Wales, PA, and he said his uncle bought it from a woodworker in Pittsburgh, PA. I paid $200 for it, and it was in pretty rough shape. I think I paid too much for the condition it was in, but the guy threw in an Atlas Press Co. table saw for another $100, and I needed some summer projects so I didn't have a problem overpaying.

I have learned that there was probably a raised lip that was machined off of the original fence. Apparently the knobs and the "ears" that stick out of the outfeed table are also very characteristic of this model. Unfortunately there were no badges or serial numbers listed. Each part was labeled with embossed lettering that had been cast into the piece. The knobs are labeled "J8", the fence "J-5", and the main base is labeled "J-1".

The base seen in the picture was custom fabricated by the original owner, and the motor was replaced with a 1/2 HP Craftsman somewhere along the line.

Edited to move from Barton to Jaro. original entry date 6/21/12. /RD

Comments: A rear view of the Barton jointer. The "ears" that protrude from the back of the outfeed table to support the fence are just visible in this picture. They are apparently characteristic of Barton jointers.
