Comments:
This is a Brown and Sharpe Tool and Cutter Grinder. I purchased it from an individual in Maryland off of e-bay. It was in rough shape and I was the only bidder but took a chance on the unit. When we picked it up we found it to still be tight and in good mechanical condition, it was just really dirty. When we took it apart we found everything to be in excellent condition with minimal wear. Cleaned and reassembled we found that the table will hold less than 5/10,000 of an inch over 12" of travel.

The tool and cutter grinder is used for sharpening all types of tool bits depending on the accessories mounted. Typically they are used for sharpening end mills, side mills, slab mills, drill bits and other tools. The tool to be sharpened is mounted in a fixture on the top. The table can be pivoted to an angle or taper per inch setting relative to the grinding wheel so various grinding angles can be achieved. The handle on the far left moves the table back and forth so that the tool to be sharpened passes through the grinding wheel. The wheel on the front moves the table in and out, and the wheel on the top of the spindle moves the whole spindle up and down. All graduated in 1/1000". Note that this machine has a label on the front that states "Conforms to the orders of the War Product Board" which would put it in the WWII time frame. Original color was grey so perhaps it was on a ship at one time?

Comments: Finished unit. Note that the main On/OFF switch size is an odd industrial size with a 3.5" spacing that is not manufactured anymore. Many thanks to an engineer at Leviton for making up a custom switch.
