Comments:
This was found with a large lathe I recently purchased which was originally used in the Dorchester Turning Company in Boston. The rest clearly has "Taylor and Railey's Pat. Claremont, NH 1884" cast into it.
What is unclear is who actually made the rest, though it is known that the patent was assigned to the Railey Back Rest Company in Boston.(see entry for Frank K. Moore)
These were also sold/ made under the name "Frank K. Moore". Moore was a machinery dealer in Boston,(A dealer tag was observed by me on an American Woodworking Machinery lathe) and it was common practice at the time for dealers to sell machines and accessories with the dealer's name cast in (see also Wm. Fields, another prominent Boston machinery dealer/ mfr.).
