Comments:
I brought this lathe home a few years ago as a rescue mission. I obtained it from the grandson of the original owner. The lathe was bought for a line shaft shop at one of the chair mills in Orange, Mass. The lathe came to me with a few chucks, face-plates, all the threading gears, and even a steady rest and key-less chuck. The key-less chuck has a patent date from the civil war! When the lathe was removed from the line-shaft shop, a simple, but nice, hand made motor bracket was built to run a 110v reversing motor. One day, my goal would be to modify this into a small ceiling mounted line-shaft. (Oh, and even restore it back to the original semi-gloss black!) For now, she just get's to work in my shop...

From what I have found on the net about the company, this lathe pre-date's 1891 when "& Co." was added to the F.E. Reed name.

Comments: The full load from what I bought it home. This is what it should look like if on a line-shaft.

Comments: An odd height adjustment. The bit is raised by the entire carriage. However, this is at an angle. As you turn inwards, the bit goes up!

Comments: This is the "lines-shaft" they added. I really want to remove this and leather belt of off the ceiling.
