Comments:
In the early 1980s, a Hartford, Connecticut area inventor/machinist acquired this grinder and stand from the Stanley Company in nearby New Britain. He was serving as a consultant to Stanley at the time and one afternoon while leaving the manufacturing area through a back door, noticed the grinder leaning against a dumpster. Reportedly, it was a real mess both internally and externally having been used every work shift at the plant for decades. The fellow quickly re-entered the factory and asked about the poor old grinder. A foreman verified that it was "trash," and helped put it in the consultant's trunk. At the time, there was talk of Stanley building a "tool museum," so the lucky finder planned to restore the grinder and loan it back to Stanley for the proposed exhibits. When that proposal didn't materialize, I bought it for use in my home workshop. The motor tag reads: "TYPE 586; 4.5 amps; 1/3-hp; 2960-3560 rpm; Serial: G 6038 F; The Stanley Electric Tool Division." I'm not sure of the vintage, but guess it hails from the 1940s. By the way, the eye shields are illuminated and the stand is embossed with the Stanley name. I'd be grateful for any info that'd help pinpoint its age.
