This image is a page from the Beverly City directory with an ad for Reid Bros.. On the opposite page is an ad for the United Shoe Machinery Corp. just down the street from Reid Bros.. My father, a longtime employee of Reid Bros., informed me that the USM Corp. was contracted to build a quantity of surface grinders for Reid at a time of excess orders but that it didn't work out well. It seemed that USM didn't apply the same strict adherence to tolerances that Reid did and they needed to rework many of these machines produced by USM. USM was widely known as the largest job shop in the world and were known to have made woodworking bandsaws for another company but time has erased the identity of that company. USM's mainstay was shoemaking machinery and their attitude was summed up in a phrase I have heard many times here in Beverly. "It's good enough for shoes" USM's plant was enormous, with 1.2 million sq feet of floorspace and one of the largest foundries in New England.

Reid Bros. also had arrangements with Fay and Scott of Dexter, ME to build overflow orders and I remember my dad going there several times in the 1960s and 1970s to help. My father was amazed at Fay and Scott's ability to build the same quality machinery in much less time that Reid's. Reid was also the parent company of Post Machinery which produced large folding box making machines and was my father's main work there.
My grandfather and father-in-law also worked for Reid at different times
This ad is from 1946
