This is one of those times when letting my co-workers know that I restore OWWM paid off.
I travel to meetings by vehicle when others fly, and they think I’m nuts to drive hundreds of miles so that can haul a power tool for someone I’ve never met, or pick up a power tool and haul it back. One of my co-workers found out last August that I collect / use OWWM, and that I had driven to MN from MI just to pick up some scroll saw parts ( stand, etc) via metro Milwaukee on my way to the meeting, and mentioned that he had a jigsaw. He had apparently picked it up in a box of ‘junk’ just to get a couple of drawshaves, and this jigsaw and homemade disk sander was in the box. Well, he put it on a shelf in the garage, and his wife kept bugging him to get rid of ‘that junk’, so we tried unsuccessfully to connect three times this summer.
Finally, this week while in N. MN on business before ArnFest, I ask him if he still had the jigsaw – a family member was driving up that afternoon, so he had it brought up. He kept telling me it looked like a homemade saw, and really old, and I had no idea what I was going to see.
When the trunk was opened, I got goosebumps at what I saw – an American Boy Scroll Saw – complete, and in operable condition. The round belt was broken, but it clearly had been used on the 1725 RPM motor – that must be something to see!
He was glad to get rid of the ‘junk’, appease the wife, and get me a tool I could use – I like that kind of win all the way around.
It’s in good shape, considering it is about 90 years old; paint is fair, everything is free and runs. The only thing missing is the handle on the flywheel – no doubt taken off when motorized.
What a cool find – I really enjoy the shape and engineering in scroll saws, and while this one won’t cut much more wood, it is neat to have as part of my OWWM.
Update: 12-30-11 - Found in publication archives that this 8" scroll saw was the 'improved' model introduced in 1928.
