I purchased this lathe and a Burke #4 milling machine from an estate sale local to me in the Spring of 2010. It's pictured just as I found it; the surface rust on it is due to the broken window behind it. The drive contershaft and headstock cover shown leaning on the headstock was disconnected and pretty much disassembled- seems the cast iron cover had been broken and welded (well!) but the PO passed away before he completed re-assembling it.
Dating the lathe has been confusing- according to the serial number(and tag) it was made before Atlas purchased Clausing in 1950(?), but it has the heavier 200 series apron (which was used on later 100 series models) and the clutch control is on the left side of the headstock housing. The nice people at Clausing sent me a manual for the machine acording to the serial number, which is pre-1950, but this lathe is identical to a Model 4800, which is what these lathes became after Atlas purchased the company.
I plan to restore the lathe as a user to replace my 10" Atlas. It needs a few parts for the drive, particularly slip rings for the clutch which I'll have to make.
