4/30/2011 Trying to find a 4”or 6” old inexpensive jointer, put a WTB add on CL. One guy calls, 2 miles from my house, says he has a 4” c’man, $75. C’man is trashed, broken table, no cutter guard, he won’t plug it in because the “cord is bad”. House is his mothers who recently passed, he’s been storing stuff in the garage for 20yrs. and has to get rid of it all because there’re selling the house.
OK, no thanks, anything else for sale? Pulls an old tarp off the Yates, “I’m selling this too”. Never seen one before, but I want it. He asks $50(compared to the $75 for the trashed 4” c’man, go figure), I offer $30, done deal.
Seems like this is a pretty unusual scroll saw, only 6 show up in the photo index, one of which has the same casting but not the original variable speed drive. The drive works by rotating the lever near the cast hump, which slides on a cast piece attached to the motor(don’t know what the motor is at this point, but will update), which slides the motor along a shaft and increases/decreases tension, and I guess speed(like I said, never seen one before). Looks complete to me, if anyone sees anything missing let me know.
I like the cast legs/end pieces a lot, cool deco and beefy, 14”x29”. One of the ends is cracked, so I have to find someone that knows how to weld/braze ci. The table is 14”x14”. Pretty sure the original color is the same as the green on the name tag and the end of the main casting where the legs attach. I won’t do anything to this for awhile except admire it. I have no practical use for this buts it’s a keeper, historical arn art. I put a hat on it for scale, pics are in the back of my truck, hoping my cousin can help me unload it today.
