You've heard of Ten Pin Bowling and Ten Gallon Hats (think of 'Hoss' in Bonanza) - well now we've got 'Ten Dollar Saturday'!! "Ten Dollar Saturday?" you ask. That's the auction where (almost) all of the used tools go for ten dollars or less. This was at one of those 'Amish Mud Sales' up in south-central Pennsylvania last Saturday. There were quilts and furniture, livestock and farm equipment, flowers and shrubbery, antiques and yard sale junk, and plenty of good food! There were also two tents full of tools...

Most of the bidders were at "the shiny new things" tent. I was next door with the fortunate few who were perusing (drooling over) the four flatbed farm wagons piled high with all kinds of Old Arn, tools and what-not. In one of these haphazardly stacked boxes I found a 3&1/2" wide laminated Carpenter's Slick with 11" of usable blade left . . . "Miscellaneous box of tools - SOLD for $10.00!" Another rare find on that wagon was a "Funny looking vise - SOLD, for $10.00!" that turned out to be a COMPLETE early 'turtleback' Emmert Patternmaker's Vise. Another guy got a box full of stuff for ten bucks that included a Stanley No.78 Shoulder Plane, and a Stanley 'Bedrock' No.5C Jack Plane . . . Yeah, there sure were some incredible deals to be had that day!

Then around 12:30, they started to auction off the larger Arn and equipment placed in front of the tents. The newer stuff went for big money, and a beautiful (original paint and complete - with no rust, scratches or dents) 1963 Delta 14" bandsaw went for $400.00. The older, grubbier machines went for peanuts - including my last catch of the day: a 1961 Delta Unisaw, with a grungy top and sloppily brushed on light blue overpaint (but thankfully NOT on the serial number or Unisaw on/off tags), with a tiny Dayton replacement motor. No dents, no rust, no dust port holes - but WITH both handles, lock knobs and louvered dust door . . . How much did it go for? You guessed it - "Table Saw - SOLD, for $10.00!"

Then the 'fun' part came when I had to take it apart and shoe-horn it all into the back of my 2 Door Hatchback 1996 Ford Escort. Hey, no problem - just drop the back seats, lay the cast iron top and fence rails down (covered with layers of cardboard and old blankets) and slide her on in - yes, it can be done!! With plenty of room left for my toolbox, the carpenter's slick, Emmert vise, and even the laundry!! (LOL), Mike in Maryland
