Comments:
The lathe is a small bench lathe with a heavy cast iron flat bed 26" long. It has a very small universal 3-jaw chuck with a square backplate. The spindle center to the top of the bed is about 4-3/4".

It has a 3-step cone pulley with equally spaced small indexing holes drilled in the edge of the largest cone that engages a small rod to hold it in place. The head stock opposite the chuck has a screw adjustment for taking up axially play of the spindle and it is held in place with a lock nut. The spindle bearings are split bronze plain bearings. The machine is very heavily constructed especially for its size. It is also very well made. There are not markings at all on any of the castings.

The fasteners are either raised cheese head screws or square head bolts. The pitches of the screws are like British Standard Whitworth (1/2-12), but the thread form is the same as UNC. I have been told that many machinery builders in the late 1800's up through the 1930's used the Whitworth pitch but with a 60 degree thread form that is not rounded at the root and crest. Some people think the machine is of Massachusetts origin, possibly Fitchburg or Worcester. It would be great to find out who built the machine and when.
