I stumbled across this 1968 Boyar-Schultz 6x18 hydraulic surface grinder last year in a local Kijiji ad. The last pic shows the machine sitting on a pallet in the sellers garage. When new, I understand these machines cost nearly $13,000! He had bought it from his employer, but never got it running as it had 3-phase motors on the grinder spindle and dust collector cabinet. This machine came equipped with a hydraulic table to power it on the X-axis. It also has an Bijur automatic oiler to pump oil lubricating the ways and screws. The 6x18 magnetic vice that came with it was quite rusty, but I had another 6x18 Eclipse (England) mag vice to put on it. I will eventually refurb the rusty mag vice and sell it.

I lugged it home, torn it down, cleaned, painted and refurbed it back to basically new condition. I changed out the motors for single-phase 3,450 TEFC ones and built a control panel from my collection of Allen-Bradley parts. The original dust collector scoop was missing so I fabricated a new one which is a little bigger and probably does a better job of capturing the mess. I had another machine light kicking around so I added that instead of the original since the shade was cracked. During the refurb, I decided not to use the hydraulic table control since I didn't have the hydraulic pump/reservoir that originally came with it. So that functionality is not operational, but the machine works perfectly using the large left hand wheel to move the table back and forth. Over all, I'm very pleased with how smooth and quiet it runs.
