This belt driven grinder/buffer was aquired from my grandfather it had been sitting in my basement since the late 1960's. I think this was made locally at the old Manistee Iron Works /XLO Michigan tool foundry that was here from 1909 until 1985. I think they made these as rough castings (sand cast aluminum) for some other company, the time period is anyones guess. There are absolutely no identifying numbers or marks of any kind. It was unfinished. I decided to make it work. I replaced the bearings, machined two aluminum internal spacers and two external covers to hold the bearings in place. And made a back cover out of stainless steel from an old aquarium cover. The shaft is 5/8 in left side and 1/2 inch right side. After coming across a picture identical to this and talking to Brian This was likely made from a Poly Products grinder that was used as a pattern to make this casting.
