For the princely sum of $9, I purchased this hand-cranked grinder along with three big sling hooks at a central Virginia auction house. I'll never use the sea going-sized sling hooks, but the grinder was just too tempting.

The machine came apart easily. After some paint stripper and time spent with a wire-wheel, file and emery paper, it was ready to paint and reassemble. The color is a mixture of Rustoleum forest green and jet black. I just kept adding black until it looked as dark as I wanted, certainly an unrepeatable recipe. I did replace some of the screws and bolts with fresh stainless steel hardware. At some point I'll need to replace the grinding wheel, as the face of the current abrasive is far from true.

You can see that the mounting bracket was cracked and then repaired. I left the braze more than a little bit proud of the casting, as I think the bulk adds at least some strength to the repair.

Origin? There were a couple of digits cast into the back side of the gear cover, otherwise, no other markings. From the shade of the original green paint, I suspect this might have been military hardware, perhaps as part of an Army battalion's maintenance shop tool set.
